A Wise Guy Is A Humble Guy
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to be wise in my own eyes or
lean on my own understanding. Help me to trust in you with all of my heart and
in all of my ways. - In Jesus’ name. Amen
Read Proverbs 25
Observations to Make:
Here is another chapter in the Proverbs that has a
lot to say about our speech. Read through the chapter again and put a T next to
all of these proverbs, T for Tongue!

This is one of two proverbs we will take note of
this week that discourages self promotion. Jesus certainly had this proverb in
mind when he gave his disciples instruction in Luke 14.7-11. Read that text and
write a reference to this proverb in the margin.
Live it!
Are there areas in your life where you are exalting
yourself? Do you find yourself tooting your own horn, or looking to sit in the
finest seats? Confess this to the Lord.
Share it!
Focus today on humbling yourself in the presence of
the Lord and in the company you find yourself in. Look for an opportunity to
serve someone who you would normally lead. If opportunity allows, give up
something today that you believe you have a right to.

Answering A Fool
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to be a fool. Help me to store
up your commands and keep them in my heart. - In Jesus Name. Amen
Read Proverbs 26
Observations to Make:
Note here three pictures of a fool found in this
chapter. A fool is like . . .
1.
2.
3.

See the proverb right after this one. At first
these proverbs would seem to be at odds, saying the exact opposite. You might
understand these two proverbs together in this way: in unimportant matters one
should just ignore the fool; but in issues that do matter, the fool is to be
corrected, otherwise
our silence might be taken as agreement with the fool. These two proverbs put
together illustrate that human problems are often complex, and the principle
that applies to one may not apply to the other. This isn’t situational ethics, it’s merely a recognition that different problems
can require different solutions
Live it!
When was the last time you lowered yourself to the
level of a fool by unnecessarily engaging him or her in an argument?
When was the last time you remained silent when the
fool should have been corrected?

These would be two great proverbs to post on the
fridge. Share them with someone and see if you can tell them how these two
proverbs differ in meaning.

Let Another Praise You
Prayer: Lord, when help me to express appreciation for the
praise of others and at the same time deflect that praise to you, to give you
the glory for all the good in my life. -
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Read Proverbs 27
Observations to Make:
Note the 3 proverbs that address the praise you
receive from others in this passage. One of them is harder to recognize than
the others.

Look up these other Scriptures that condemn self-exaltation:
Pr 25.27, Mt 23.12.
Live it!
If you are like me, sometimes you are guilty of
fishing for compliments. This is another way of praising yourself, but with
someone else’s words. See how many days you can go without praising yourself or
coaxing someone else to do it – starting now!
Share it!
When someone else praises you this week, thank that
person and at the same time deflect the praise to the Lord.

Finding Mercy
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the forgiveness you give every
time I confess my sins to you. Help me to repent of my sin and live the godly
life you desire. - In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
Read Proverbs 28
Observations to Make:
As you read this chapter you will see that almost
all of these proverbs offer contrasts between godliness and wickedness.
Identify all these proverbs by circling the conjunctions “but,” and “than” in
each proverb.

What is the phrase conceals his sins
contrasted with?
What is the phrase does not prosper
contrasted with?
Live it!
Are there concealed sins in your life you need to
confess and renounce this day? Why are both of these actions critical –
confessing and renouncing? What is the difference between the two? Thank God
for the mercy you have found in Jesus Christ.
Share it!
Who in your life appears not to be prospering? While
a lack of prosperity isn’t necessarily a sign of hidden sin, it may be. Pray
for the struggling people around you that they would find the Lord’s mercy.

Anger
Prayer: Lord, I pray for your Spirit’s work in my life. Give
me greater and greater control over my anger. – In Jesus Name Amen.
Read Proverbs 29
Observations to Make:
Put an angry face next to all the proverbs in this
chapter which address the issue of anger.

What are the contrasting subjects of this proverb?
Look up Proverbs 14.1 and 16.32 and put angry faces
near those proverbs as well.
Live it!
Note this proverb condemns fully venting anger, not
feeling anger. When was the last time you fully vented your anger? What was the
result? Do you regret venting your anger?
Share it!
This is a proverb to memorize and share. Ask a
close friend if you strike them as a person who is angry. Don’t get mad if he
or she says, Yes, you are angry person.

Look up these other passages that teach that God’s
word is sacred and not to be altered. Put Pr 30.6 as a reference next to them:

If you look in the proverb just above this one, Pr

is that reason?
