What further instruction does James add to this
proverb in James 4.13-16?
Live it!
Maybe you have heard it said, “We don’t know what
the future holds, but we know who holds the future.” We can’t boast about the
future because the future is uncertain. Let that truth humble you. Let the
uncertainties drive you to the Lord, putting your whole trust in Him. This may
be a good time to review your plans for the future, planning wisely, and at the
same time acknowledging your future is in the Lord’s hands.
Share it!
Share your plans for the future with someone asking
them to join you in prayer, asking the Lord to guide you in all your ways.

It sounds harsh but this proverb seems to be saying
that the Lord will not listen to our prayers if we will not listen to him. If
we are not in God’s Word, hearing him speak to us, he will turn a deaf ear our
prayers. Wow. Here is great motivation to be faithful in our study. Consider what
Bible study you will be involved in when your Proverbs study is complete.

We can thrive and rejoice when righteous leaders
are ruling, but we will suffer under wicked leadership. Determine as the political machine gears up
for the next election cycle to pay even greater attention to the character of
those candidates seeking government office in our country and state.

This is a good time to pray for the leadership of
our nation, state and local community. Pray for wisdom and righteous character
for these people.

How appropriate to wind down our study of the Proverbs
with another command, grant it indirectly, to honor our mother and father and
receive their instruction and counsel. And this warning is a whopper – a
warning of terrible punishment for those who disrespect their parents. Here is
an opportunity to consider your relationship with your parents. Would they
consider you a respectful child? What are some ways that you could honor them
even this week?

The book of Proverbs concludes with this
description of a woman who is characterized by the godly wisdom and righteous
character depicted in the entire book of proverbs. The fact that the passage
open with the question “who can find her?”
suggests that she is not easily found and a treasure to value when she is
found. I often think of this passage as a prayer request list to use in praying
for my wife. If you are a husband keep this passage close as a tool to pray for
and encourage your wife and your daughters. As a woman you can also make use of
Proverbs 31 as a list of concerns to take to God in prayer and as personal
goals for godly character and conduct.
